PLC tags from an IO list: CSV, Excel, and Studio 5000 L5X

By Saad, practising automation engineer · Updated 2026-09-25

Export PLC / DCS tags from the same IO list as the loop diagrams. CSV and Excel for any vendor. Studio 5000 L5X is tags and descriptions only — not a controller program.

One list, drawings and tags

The instrument engineer types the IO list once. The drafter traces loops. The PLC programmer re-types the same tags into Studio 5000 or TIA. Those three copies drift. SchematicForge issues loop diagrams and a tag list from the same rows so names, types, and descriptions match.

One row per signal. PT-1001 with an analog process variable and a digital alarm is two tags. HMI / SOFT rows can be included; they already land in the software register on the drawing package.

What the file contains

Tag, Type (BOOL or REAL), Description, Loop, SignalType, Role, Node, Card, Slot, Channel, Wiring. Type is mapped from the IO-list signal type: DI/DO/BI/BO to BOOL, AI/AO/RTD/TC to REAL. Unknown types are omitted, not guessed.

Node, card, slot, and channel are copied when the IO list has them. Empty stays empty. The generator does not invent Local:5:I.Data.3. Range low / range high print in the description as text (0-10 bar). They are not PLC min/max or setpoints.

CSV, Excel, and L5X

CSV is the vendor-neutral import. Excel adds a cover sheet and the disclaimer. Studio 5000 L5X is tags and descriptions inside a Controller stub — no rungs, no programs, no AOIs. Import into an empty or dedicated tag scope. Do not overwrite a running processor.

TIA Portal Openness XML is not in this slice. Use CSV for Siemens until a later format. Free is the blank template plus a 10-row browser tool; generated project files on free are the first 15 tags, watermarked Excel, no L5X. Paid packs attach the full set when formats are enabled.

Frequently asked questions

Does this generate Studio 5000 logic?

No. L5X contains tag names, BOOL/REAL types, and descriptions only. No rungs, routines, or AOIs. Controller configuration stays in Rockwell tools.

Will it invent I/O addresses?

No. Channel, slot, and node are copied from the IO list when present. Blank means the list had no address.

Can I import the L5X into a live processor?

Do not. Import into an empty or dedicated tag scope. The file is a drafting aid, not a download that should overwrite a running controller.
